On the Fourth day of Christmas…

On the 4th day of Christmas my TRUE LOVE gave to me… the hum of a drum?

Do you remember the story of the Little Drummer Boy? Perhaps you’ve even seen the cartoon or listened to the melody – pa rum pum pum pum.

While this sweet story has no Biblical basis that I can determine, it still remains a lovely, darling story about a young orphan boy that happens upon Mary, Joseph and the newborn Christ the King. With his loyal animal friends in tow, the little drummer boy approaches the Baby Jesus with only his drum to recommend him. What gift does a lonely, poor boy give “to fit a King” the lyrics explain.

The young boy humbly asks to “play for Him,” the Baby Jesus – a modest offering given in a pure and genuine way, to celebrate God’s gift to our world. I just get chills as I tap my fingers to the melody and sentiment of that fictional moment. I think of all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season – shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, party planning – and I’m reminded of the simplicity of the Little Drummer Boy story – stripping away the trappings of the holiday season to be reminded of what the season is REALLY all about – Christ! A celebration, an awakening of our hearts anew to the birth of our Savior; the grace in His love for us, His sons and daughters.

I have been praying about what I might do that is a “special offering” for the readers who have lovingly followed me and supported me this year and in years past. You have blessed me more than I can ever express!

To that point, would you allow me this moment to play my “drum” for YOU?? I want to celebrate YOU!!

  5. I think my favorite would have to be Silent Night and Mary Did You Know? I can only imagine the wonder and amazement she felt as she looked on her precious baby that first Christmas! Thank you Pat for all that you have done to help me grow closer to The Lord!

  6. Good morning, Pat,
I love Christmas music so much it is very difficult to even think about a favorite. I do know at the very top of my list is a Charles Wesley Advent song, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus. The lyrics are wonderful and the music seems a simple Gaelic tune. Listening to songs like this helps to keep me focused on why we celebrate, decorate, give gifts, etc. I love everything about Christmas and always have. I love Christmas trees and presents and cookies and nativities and Christmas concerts and need I go on? But I love Jesus more and don’t want to lose Him in all the other good stuff December offers. If you haven’t heard my favorite song in a while google the title and listen to the version by Red Mountain Music. They play it and sing it simply as written. Have a wonderful day. Kristi

    1. Thank you sweet ladies–YOU are a new song fro me. The lord knew I needed to see a few friends on here before letting this blogging thing go–I am singing each song in my heart as I read 🙂

  8. My favorite Christmas song is “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” by Longfellow. Verses 3 & 4 are sooooo important for us to remember now, with all that’s happening in our world:
Vs 3 – And in despair I bowed my head: “There is no peace on earth,” I said, “For hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, goodwill to men.”
Vs 4 – Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, goodwill to men.”

Longfellow wrote this after having lost his wife to a freak accidental fire and two years later, his son was gravely injured during the civil war. So much tragedy, and he was honest about his feelings, but God worked on his heart, and he ended with the affirmation that God is not dead, nor does He sleep. Makes me want to shout, “Hallelujah!”

  9. Love “Mary Did You Know” especially the line “Did you know when you kissed your baby’s face, you kissed the face of God?” Gives me chills every time I hear it.

  10. Thank you for the opportunity!! One of my favorite Christmas songs is “Mary Did You Know?”. The question of whether Mary knew she kissed the face of God when she kissed her baby blows me away every time!! Merry Christmas, Pat!!

  11. You truly inspire me with every blog post. Thanks for being an example of faithfulness and learning to enjoy the quiet rest only God can give. My favorite Christmas song is Be Born in Me by Francesca Bastelli
